Innovative Carnatic vocalist, activist and author TM Krishna discusses the future of Indian classical music and his refusal to bow down to pressure from the musical or political establishments.

TM Krishna has long been an advocate for art’s power to heal India’s deep social divisions, breaking barriers of caste and class to unleash what music has to offer not just for some, but for all. More recently he has also spoken out on the #MeToo movement, stating that ‘misogyny and patriarchy informs every aspect of our lives.’ As a vocalist, his innovations in the style and substance of his concerts have often attracted controversy.

Interviewed by senior BBC journalist, Charu Shahane, former trustee of Darbar, this discussion provides insights into Krishna’s experimentations with Carnatic music as well as his views on art, culture, society, politics and religion.

Carnatic music is a style of Indian classical music commonly associated with South India and evolved from ancient Sanatana dharma sciences and traditions.
